A Non-Executive Director is required for a company which has been established by a charity to operate an arts and events business in part of a Grade II* listed building in the heart of the historic city of St. Albans, Herts. The charity has a twenty year lease on the premises.
A mix of money-making events (weddings, corporate entertainment, conferences, music recitals etc) and arts events are being run. It is anticipated that soon the company will be paying dividends to the charity which will use the income to achieve its aims (see below). The company is entirely owned by the charity.
We are looking for a Non-Executive Director with an events management background ideally in the arts who can help develop the business.
It will be beneficial if the Non-Executive Director wishes to make an investment into the business.
1. The opportunity:
• In the long term, our client seeks to create an architecturally iconic, multi-purpose arts centre in the middle of the city with substantial galleries, a flexible 1,200 seat theatre/concert venue which will attract major touring companies, a warm and welcoming 400 seat studio space for smaller events, a cinema and other arts facilities.
• A vibrant programme of theatre, music, dance, opera, popular shows, community events, visual art, courses and workshops will act as a compelling magnet for the hundreds of thousands of people who live in the vicinity.
• The area surrounding the proposed centre is rich in culture of all kinds and the objective is to help create attractive eating places and arts-related retail outlets. With a retractable roof, the central piazza will host festivals, fairs and street performances all year round.
• The objective is to transform the city into one of great cultural interest and beauty, a centre of excellence for all the arts. As a first step to achieving this, the Charity has successfully bid for the contract to run a substantial part of the old Town Hall as an arts and events venue.
• The location of the premises, the size of the function room and its magnificence, guarantee a strong demand from fee-paying users. Turnover is anticipated to reach £100k pa in the short term and then increase to £500k.
• The charity is looking for an investment of £50k with a good rate of return which can be paid in two instalments.
2. Non-Executive Director Requirements:
• We are looking for a Non-Executive Director with an events management background and a passion for the arts.
• The Non Exec will be expected to play a strategic and pivotal role within the facility.
• It is expected that the role will require approx 2 days a month after the initial start-up phase.
• It will be beneficial if the Non-Executive Director wishes to make an investment into the business.
